It seems Tablet PC with "fixed and stable" screens are in the air

About 10 days ago, I was praising the new Acer Tablet PC design. Acer had teh very good idea, I think, to rigidly fix the Tablet screen to the PC when used in PC/keyboard mode, which greatly widens the use of the hardware (see why).

Today, Fujitsu announces a new Tablet with exactly the same principle. (Historically, Fujitsu and Acer have been the most innovative Tablet PC manufacturers).

Of course, however good Fujitsu engineers may be at copying ideas, they can’t design a new Tablet in 10 days, so this means that Fujitsu and Acer guys had the same idea, at the same time – and probably for the very same reasons. This is most often the way innovation happens, whether you talk of technical innovation or even fundamental research. Things are “in the air” and several people or teams find them almost at the same moment (see for instance Newton’s invention of calculus, together with Leibniz, but with different techniques and without any communication between the two).

(Much) more modestly, when I invented Speechi (beginning of 2003), there was absolutely nothing comparable to be seen. But when the first Speechi prototype came in (end of 3003), there were 3 competitors and at least 10 new similar products announced (it is funny to note that even today, there are only 3 or 4 “similar” products being marketed – I don’t know what happened to all others – may be they failed, may be they had no real intention to do it).

Unfortunately for our ego, we never invent alone, whatever our feeling may be.
