Pourquoi Speechi traduit-il le PowerPoint en Flash ? / Why does Speechi translate PowerPoint to Flash ?

Still another small but relevant Hennessy’s computations : A sequel to E-learning and the taste for RISC and Why does Speechi work from PowerPoint ?

We could have thought about various output formats to broadcast PowerPoint on the Web (video, HTML, SVG…). But none of this format was really compatible across all operating systems and all browsers (Web designers do know that even a website developped in HTML will be viewed differently from Firefox or from Internet Explorer).

Developing Speechi in Flash was more complex (let’s say 50% more complex) then developing it in HTML, but then, we knew Speechi could be viewed from 98% of connected machines without any additional work. So the “efficiency” of the development was 98/150.

If we had decided to develop in SVG format (argument for it: this is an Open Source, normalized format), we would have touched only 10 to 20% potential users (others would have to download a plug-in, which did not work very well on the MAC for our purpose…).

Had we developped in HTML, we would have needed adaptations for various browsers and systems (and we would have encountered limitations for some animations). We estimated that the amount of work needed to cover 90% of configurations would be 200, so the efficiency was 90/200 (without accounting for limitations, that were quite severe.

Whatever the way we took it, Flash was the clear winner of those small “Hennessy’s computations“. The big advantage is that they also avoid having ideological discussions like “HTML is a standard, whereas Flash is proprietary”. Any potential so-called “advantage” of one technology above the other can be quantified.
